Alcohol abuse centers engage in curing and stabilizing alcohol addiction. When a person finds a compulsive need to consume excessive amounts of alcohol he is an alcohol addict. Alcohol abuse is a disease which has negative effects on health, work and educational, social and family life.

Many people start out consuming alcohol for fun and then compulsion takes over and they become addicts. An addict is unable to abruptly stop consuming alcohol, if his alcohol is taken away from him; he develops serious discomfort known as alcohol withdrawal. Alcoholics require proficient assistance to give up alcoholism.

Alcohol has many negative effects on the health of an individual. It can cause severe damage to the brain cells and may ultimately result in brain damage. Alcohol disturbs the central nervous system and can have profound effects on a person’s cognitive abilities. It also has severe economic effects in addition to negative social effects and can engage in domestic violence.

Alcohol abuse centers can aid in addiction recovery. One of the methods adopted in reducing alcohol addiction is rationing and moderation of alcohol consumption. Another method involves Detoxifying; this involves substituting alcohol with other less harmful substances, this helps in reducing withdrawal symptoms. All these methods are performed, controlled and supervised by experts at addiction treatment centers.

At alcohol rehab, group therapy and psychotherapy are used to deal with alcohol addiction. This is a form of de-addiction in which the counselor assists the addict in recovering from his addiction. A group oriented therapy helps patients interact with each other and help one another in coping. Alcohol Anonymous was first set up in America and is an organization that provides addiction services and also has many abuse centers set up over the country.

A variety of medicines under psychiatric and clinical supervision can also be administered to recovering alcoholics. Though, there is a possibility that dual addiction may take place where an addict becomes dependent on these medicines as well. Alcohol addiction takes a long period to recover from and an addict requires a lot of help from family and friends. Alcohol abuse centers have proven to be the most effective tools in reducing alcohol addiction.
